On the state stud-farm, Tomás (Rudolf Jelínek) is preparing to become a jockey together with other boys. He loves to read cowboy stories and Western pulp magazines and his passion makes him a laughing-stock of his friends and pretty Vera, his couch's daughter. Tomás looks for refuge with aging jockey Kosina (Eduard Dubský) and listens in admiration to his tales of old jockey glory. He doesn't suspect that Kosina had to leave the racecourse because of fraud and that he is still looking for ways to get easy money.

A small Moravian town near Brno in the 1920s. In a forest clearing, the mentally disabled Fricek discovers three dead young people: the nineteen-year-old daughter of the local forest ranger Růžena, the butcher's assistant Hrnčíř, and the former student Roubal. The story from a small Czech mountain village takes place over five days in February 1948 and describes the fate of a young couple, Tomáš and Vendula, against the backdrop of events that reflect the atmosphere of the time, with a political crisis brewing and radical changes on the horizon. The preparations for the wedding of the young couple – miner Tomáš and teacher Vendula – are not going according to plan. Food such as sugar, butter, and bread are still rationed. In addition to their personal problems, the escalating political situation further complicates matters. The lives of Tomáš and Vendula are affected by the disputes between their grandfathers – retired miner Václav Kašpar and his childhood friend, grocer Rynda. The youngest descendants of the feuding families thus find themselves in the fateful position of Romeo and Juliet.

In 13th-century Bohemia, King Přemysl Otakar II sends his Bezděz castle steward Oldřich of Chlum north to broker a peace-marriage between the feuding Dubé and Vartemberk houses, only for him and his men to stumble on a murdered merchant’s trail. At the celebratory feast meant to seal the alliance, the Vartemberk castellan is killed and suspicion falls on a humble lutenist whose fiancée the victim had tried to violate, plunging Oldřich into a dangerous game of courtly intrigue.
